Hey 🫶🏽!
I wanted to take a moment to reflect on something that came up during my live session on the Inspo Box page yesterday. One of the key topics I touched on was confronting the fear that can hold us back from creating what we truly desire.
After the live stream, I found myself contemplating my journey within the beading community. As many of you know, I haven’t been beading my entire life. The beadwork I’ve encountered has always carried cultural significance, which I absolutely admire. However, this admiration and respect for tradition have, at times, limited my own creative potential.
The Indigenous community has established many dos and don’ts regarding how we create, leaving me hesitant to explore certain styles. For example, I felt particularly nervous about trying floral designs, as various tribes attribute different meanings to them. The fear of backlash from creating these styles has held me back previously.
However, a significant shift occurred when I decided to stop seeking validation online and from others. I made the conscious choice to create from my heart and my unique perspective. The art I produce is deeply rooted in my life experiences and the way I see the world. The colors I choose are inspired by the vibrant hues around me.
I’ve come to believe that as creators, it’s crucial to look inward rather than constantly comparing ourselves to others. When we tap into our inner selves, we can produce our most passionate and authentic work.
Since I began to let go of the fear that previously constrained my art, I’ve discovered the freedom to create pieces that resonate with my true self. My favorite part of this journey has been incorporating unique and new elements into my work. It's refreshing to know that creativity knows no bounds. As long as I remain true to who I am, I believe there’s no right or wrong in what I create.
That being said, this freedom is a double-edged sword. It's essential to approach our art with a good heart and thoughtful intention. Creativity can take unexpected turns, and things can go awry if we don’t remain mindful of our actions. As a small rule for myself to help guide me, I do still consider cultural significant pieces and steer clear of creating anything like it unless it is from my community.
To help you overcome your fear of creating I’ve put together a few pointers that will help you expand your potential.
1. Stop Looking at Others' Work and Comparing Yourself to It
One of the biggest roadblocks to creativity is comparison. In our digital age, it’s all too easy to scroll through social media and feel inadequate compared to the work of others. Remember, everyone has their unique journey and perspective. Instead of comparing, focus on your own growth and creative expression. Believe me, I’ve been there and it’s never been a good feeling afterwards.
2. Find Inspiration from Your Life Through Colors, Textures, and Patterns
Look around you. Inspiration often lies in the small things—like the vibrant colors of nature, the interesting textures of everyday objects, or the patterns created by life itself. Take a moment to absorb your surroundings. Let these elements fuel your creativity and spark new ideas. Not only do I get inspired by what I see but also by what I touch and smell. Try using more senses than your vision.
3. Jot Down Ideas When They Come to You
Ideas can be fleeting, so it's essential to capture them as soon as they arrive. I always keep my notes app on my phone handy, ready to jot down any thoughts that come to mind. This habit not only helps you remember your ideas but also gives you a treasure trove of inspiration to revisit later. I often find myself looking through old ideas and regaining inspiration.
4. Try Something That Feels Crazy to Create
Think outside the box! Sometimes, the most unconventional ideas can lead to the most rewarding creations. Don’t be afraid to experiment, even if it seems a bit wild. You might end up surprising yourself—discovering a new passion or generating even better ideas as a result. I literally do this all of the time. The best part, I make myself laugh whether my idea works or not.
By following these steps, you can navigate the challenges of creativity more easily. Embrace inspiration when it strikes, quiet your inner critic, and remember that your unique perspective is what makes your work special.
In conclusion, I encourage all of you to embrace your creative journey without fear. Look within, trust your instincts, and remember that the most profound art often comes from our authentic selves. Let’s continue to support one another as we explore the beautiful realms of creativity together.

Keep shining bright, and happy beading! ✨
I often question my abilities and self worth when I scroll and compare myself to others, especially my beadwork, and in life. Thank you, I really needed this 🥰
